When the Mona Lisa Gets Angry: Exploring Seven Emotions with HuskyLens 2

What if the Mona Lisa could actually “smile” or “frown” at you?

The HuskyLens 2 AI Vision Sensor is a high-performance embedded vision module powered by the Kendryte K230 processor, delivering up to 6 TOPS of AI inference power. It features over 20 built-in AI models, including face recognition, object recognition, and Face Emotion Recognition — all ready to use out of the box. Beyond its built-in models, HuskyLens 2 also supports custom model deployment, allowing users to train and upload their own neural networks directly onto the device for personalized AI applications.

In this project, no additional controller is required — with HuskyLens 2 alone, you can identify seven human facial expressions in Expression Recognition mode. Through this, we bring emotional life to a painting that has remained silent for over 500 years.

Required Hardware

- HuskyLens 2 AI Vision Sensor

- Display device (monitor or screen for showing different Mona Lisa expressions)

- Seven Mona Lisa video clips, each representing a unique facial expression

Step-by-Step

Step 1 — Switch Mode

Power on the HuskyLens 2. Once the device boots into the main interface, swipe on the touchscreen to open the Main Menu, and select “Face Emotion Recognition” mode.

At this point, the built-in emotion recognition model will load automatically and start real-time detection.

Step 2 — Observe the Emotion ID

Point HuskyLens 2 toward a scene containing a human face. When a face is detected, the screen automatically highlights it with a colored frame.

Above each frame, the device displays the recognized emotion name, ID number, and confidence score — for example:

“Angry: ID1 99%” means that the model has identified the detected face as an “Angry” emotion (ID 1) with 99% confidence.

The HuskyLens automatically outputs the detected emotion category and its corresponding ID:

1️⃣ Angry 2️⃣ Disgust 3️⃣ Fear 4️⃣ Happiness 5️⃣ Neutral 6️⃣ Sadness 7️⃣ Surprise

Step 3 — Interact with Art

When HuskyLens 2 detects emotional cues in the Mona Lisa’s face — a frown, a smile, or a look of surprise — the screen shows real-time recognition results, including the emotion name, ID number, and confidence score.

Using HuskyLens 2’s built-in Face Emotion Recognition algorithm, we’ve given a centuries-old artwork the ability to perceive emotion. This project showcases HuskyLens 2’s powerful onboard AI inference and ready-to-use vision capabilities. But Face Emotion Recognition is just the beginning. Beyond this feature, the HuskyLens 2 AI Vision Sensor also supports over 20 AI functions and custom model deployment — including object recognition, object tracking, classification, and more.

Let’s keep exploring and see what other creative possibilities this “little AI eye” can bring to life!
