The Mars Sustainable Habitat Project is a cutting-edge STEM integrated hands-on project that aims to explore and realize the possibility of long-term habitation on Mars through programming, hardware control, data collection and IoT technology. The project utilizes advanced technological tools to stimulate students' interest in space exploration, provide inspiration for solving the Earth's environmental crisis, and lead humanity toward a more sustainable future.
The project features a Sustainable Mars Base interactive installation, comprising three functional modules and a wireless controller: a living base, a greenhouse base, and an energy station. The base is equipped with an oxygen circulation system, cultivation system, environmental monitoring system, and energy system to meet human survival needs. Each area is fitted with sensors and physical devices to collect data from the environment and interact with the physical world.
All data is transmitted to the IoT platform via the local network and serial port (micro:bit and K10 transmit data to LattePanda through serial port). The IoT platform is responsible for data storage and processing. The Mind+ Dashboard accesses the data, creates a user-friendly interface, and displays the data in real time.
Living Base

The base door of the living base is equipped with simulated identity recognition function use light sensor. After successful identity recognition, the LED turns from red to green and the light strip turns blue. Oxygen and ultraviolet sensors are placed inside the base, along with a light can be remote controlled and a camera for monitoring the situation inside the house in real time.
Greenhouse Base

The greenhouse base include ambient light sensors, carbon dioxide sensors, pH meters, temperature and humidity sensors, soil moisture and temperature sensors, and water pumps. The sensors are connected to the SCI module, which displays the collected data. The micro:bit is used to collect the data, and all the sensor data is sent to the IoT platform via the serial port for processing.
The greenhouse base is connected to the living base and the energy base through two pipes on the left and right respectively. The transmission of gas and energy is simulated by different colored lights inside the pipes. The green light represents oxygen, which is transferred to both sides by the greenhouse base, and the blue light represents electricity, which is transferred from the energy base to the living base and the greenhouse base.
Energy Station

This area includes two types of new energy technologies: wind power generation and solar power generation. Energy is stored through solar panels, and provide power to the LED. At the same time, the voltage of the solar panel can be detected and the data is sent to the IoT platform.
Wireless Controller

This can control the indoor lighting of the living base, the water pump in greenhouse base, and the storm simulator in energy station through three buttons.
The Dashboard

The data display for the IoT Smart City project is created using Mind+ (mindplus.cc). Mind+ Dashboard provides an intuitive and user-friendly interface for managing and controlling IoT devices, making it easy to create custom dashboards, set up alerts and notifications, and automate various tasks.
